Third Party Casket Education

Things to Consider Before Purchasing a Casket Online

Unfortunately, many of our families who have opted to purchase their casket online have been unhappy with that decision. The term Caveat Emptor applies to such decisions and is defined as: "Let the buyer beware or the buyer alone is responsible for checking the quality and suitability of goods before a purchase is made."

Since these decisions are made without the advice or assistance of Pumphrey Funeral Homes, we feel it is our responsibility to you, our client, to offer the following advice:

For your protection, you need to have the "third party casket provider" fax or email to you, at least the following information BEFORE you give them your credit card number or any money:

  1. A full warranty and lithograph of the interior and exterior of the actual casket you will be purchasing.
  2. A Purchase Contract, showing the name of the company, its physical address, phone and fax number. The Purchase Contract should detail the specifics of the casket you are purchasing, including: price, manufacturer, make, model, exterior material, interior material, as well as when, where and how the casket is to be delivered. This Purchase Contract should be signed and dated by the "third party casket provider" before you give them your credit card number or any money.
  3. Their Refund Policy. You need to have this in writing should you not be satisfied in any way with the casket or the performance of the Purchase Contract.
  4. You should also obtain the delivery date of the casket to Pumphrey Funeral Homes, so you may alert us in advance of the delivery and afford yourself the ability to be present when the casket is unpacked to inspect it for damage done during the shipping. We will note damages when we unpack the casket but have no responsibility for the damages so noted. All deliveries are to be made at the Bethesda funeral home.

If you do not secure these items, you will, in our opinion, have a much more difficult recourse against the 3rd party casket provider should you be dissatisfied with your purchase or note damage to the casket upon its arrival. More importantly, should the wrong casket be delivered or if the casket is damaged, it will potentially result in unfortunate consequences on the services you have planned with us for your loved one. The correction of such consequences will be an issue as to how you proceed with the services that you have planned.

Due to the issues that we have experienced with 3rd party casket providers, we will not set a visitation/viewing time or service time until we have received delivery of the casket or cremation container and you, or client, have inspected the casket and approved, in writing, the use of the delivered casket or cremation container in the service you have engaged us to perform.

We respectfully offer this information to you as a means of protecting you and your family from any further distress during your time of grief and loss.
