Marietta Maguire Scully
Marietta Maguire Scully, 89, the widow of Washington surgeon Dr. James H. Scully, and the former President of the Medical Auxiliary of the District of Columbia, died at her home in Bethesda, MD on June 28, 2007. The cause of death, according to family members, was lung cancer.
Born in New Britain, CT on May 15, 1918, the daughter of Edna Cashen and John P. Maguire, she was educated in New Britain public schools and at St. Joseph College, West Hartford, CT.
Mrs. Scully served as an officer of numerous organization serving the poor and underprivileged, including the Salvation Army Auxiliary, Cara, and The Christ Child Society.
Mrs. Scully was predeceased by her daughter, Diana Scully Lee, in 1981. She leaves four sons: Anthony (Joy) of Camden, SC; James (Mary) of Arlington, VA; Roger (Martha) of North Bethesda, MD; and Charles of Clarkdale, AZ, as well as seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Two brothers, John Maguire of St. Louis, MO, and the Rev. Felix Maguire of Jupiter Beach, FL, also survive her.
Friends will be received at PUMPHREYâ€(TM)S BETHESDA-CHEVY CHASE FUNERAL HOME, 7557 Wisconsin Ave., Bethesda, MD on Monday, July 2, 2007 from 7-9 PM. A Memorial Mass will be held at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, 9200 Kentsdale Drive, Potomac, MD on July 3 at 10 AM. Inurnment Gate of Heaven Cemetery. A memorial service will be held in Madison, CT, her summer home, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Diana Scully Lee Scholarship Fund at the Stone Ridge Country Day School of the Sacred Heart, 9101 Rockville Pike, Bethesda, MD 20814.
