Kathrine Veronica Barnett
Kathrine Veronica "Kay" Barnett, devoted wife, mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully at her residence in Washington, D.C., Dec. 24, 2012. She was 88.
Mrs. Barnett is survived by her son Jim, daughter-in-law Susanna, and grandchildren Katie and Henry, all of Washington, D.C. She was preceded in death by her husband, Auswell Creed "Tex" Barnett in 1978.
Mrs. Barnett was born in Philadelphia, Sept. 24, 1924, to Henry and Rose Grange. She moved to Washington as a teenager and graduated from McKinley High School in 1942. She met her husband while working as a bookkeeper at the YMCA of Washington. Mr. Barnett was the membership director, and the couple married in 1945.
Mr. Barnett went on to become chief executive of Tamblyn & Brown Inc., a fundraising consulting firm, where Mrs. Barnett also worked. The family lived in New York, Washington, and Winston-Salem, N.C. After Mr. Barnett's death, Mrs. Barnett devoted herself to raising her teenage son and later to volunteering with several charitable organizations in Winston-Salem. In 2006, she returned to Washington to participate in the lives of her grandchildren, whom she loved and adored.
